Chastising Karla Faye

by Dot Smith

America is universally recognized as a Christian nation, at least, we are constantly telling others we are Christians in the international media. Americans are also proud of their pragmatism. All too often, what should be commonplace religious values take a back seat to practicality. In reading the politically correct Atlanta Journal Constitution's "Life or Death?" (AJC, Faith & Values Section, pg. D1, 1/31/98), I came away with the distinct impression America's house is divided over capital punishment. Whether or not the death sentence should ever be imposed, not just for Karla Faye Tucker, the center of the most recent capital punishment storm, but in any such case. Tossing out ethics and morals to pursue the practical, we invariably embrace hypocrisy. Hence, the conservative religious right is seeking a reprieve for Karla Faye while supporting capital punishment in general. Obviously, Christians on the conservative right find it difficult to embrace the penalty for one of their own, claiming to be born again and/or rehabilitated. In addition, she is a white attractive woman who does not fit the stereotype: Black male.

Race aside, religion on the right is much like politics - in fact, the two make strange salacious bedfellows. Such public assignation makes it difficult to separate one from the other. Given their claim of the highest moral and ethical standards, these Christians see themselves above the President, albeit these hypocrites sanctimoniously embrace capital punishment. Hypocrisy knows no bounds when role reversal allows laying aside the penalty to save a white woman: Eloquently pointing out why a Christian society should not embrace social murder. Go figure!

A truly Christian people could not embrace capital punishment as we do in American style democracy. Christians need to send a firm message to the powers that be: WE DO NOT SUPPORT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT!!!!!!!! We at I.C.I.M. certainly do not want our elected officials to labor under the misconception that we support killing people, because we do not and are urging all like-minded Christians to send this message. Our prayer is politicians, whether on the right or left, will respond appropriately or get booted out of office, because......"We the people do not condone their efforts to play God."
