Re-Thinking US Boycott of WCAR

On Saturday, March 21, Professor Vernellia Randall held a press conference at the University of Dayton School of Law to protest the Obama administration's threatened boycott of the Durban Review Conference, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland on April 20-24, 2009. Similar press conferences were held in Philadelphia, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Charleston, St. Louis, Memphis, Washington D.C., and Fort Lauderdale.

Sponsored by the United Nations, the Durban Review is charged with evaluating the progress of the goals set forth at the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (WCAR) held in Durban, South Africa in 2001. According to a February 27, 2009 press statement issued by U.S. Department of State, the US will not send delegates to the Durban Review. Apparently, the U.S. delegation that met with the working group tasked with creating the draft conference was not pleased with the document's wording, which supposedly "singles out Israel for criticism, places unacceptable restrictions on freedom of expression under the guise of defaming religion, and calls for payment of reparations for slavery."

Jewish groups and Israel, which had already decided to boycott the conference, applauded the US decision. Professor Randall and others are urging the Obama administration to rethink its boycott and become an active participant in the Durban Review, which has the potential to "re-energize the world's collective effort to eliminate racial discrimination." They believe the West has a tremendously important role to play in efforts to eliminate racial discrimination and must be a part of the process.

According to Professor Randall, "We need President Obama to reverse the United State's long history of not participating in international efforts to eliminate racial discrimination. It is time for the United States to be a leader on eliminating racism in the world and that can only occur if the United States stays at the international table including supporting the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent."

Bit of History

Charles W. Freeman, Jr.

"On the question of U.S. strikes on targets on Iran or elsewhere, I simply want to register what I think is an obvious point; namely that what 9/11 showed is that if we bomb people, they bomb back."

Born in Rhode Island in 1943, Charles W. Freeman, Jr. lived and was educated in the Bahamas where his father was in business. At age 13, Freeman returned to the United States. After studying at Yale University under a scholarship, he studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and entered Harvard Law School.

After law school, Freeman joined the United States Foreign Service (1965), working first in India and Taiwan before being assigned to the State Department's China desk, where he was assigned as the principal interpreter during President Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to the People's Republic of China. Freeman later became the State Department Deputy Director for Republic of China (Taiwan) affairs. The State Department also sent Freeman back to Harvard during this time in order to complete his J.D.

Freeman served in various positions within the State Department, including overseas assignments as deputy chief of mission in Beijing, China and Bangkok, Thailand, before being selected as principal deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs (1986). During these assignments he attained a working knowledge of several languages. Freeman speaks fluent Chinese, French, Spanish, and conversational Arabic. He became United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia in November 1989, serving during Operation Desert Storm, until 1992.

From 1992 to 1993, Freeman served as a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies. From 1993 to 1994, he was Assistant Secretary of Defense, International Security Affairs. From 1994 to 1995, Freeman was Distinguished Fellow, United States Institute of Peace. In 1995 he became Chairman of the Board of Projects International, Inc., a Washington-based business development firm arranging international joint ventures.

In 1997, Ambassador Freeman succeeded George McGovern to become the president of the Middle East Policy Council, which "strives to ensure that a full range of U.S. interests and views are considered by policy makers." In the fall of 2006 the Council was the first American outlet to publish University of Chicago Professor John Mearsheimer and Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University Professor Stephen Walt's working paper "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy." According to an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, Freeman endorsed the paper's thesis and said of Middle East Policy Council's stance "No one else in the United States has dared to publish this article, given the political penalties that the Lobby imposes on those who criticize it."

For four years, from 2004, Freeman served on the board of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation. He is a member of the board of several diplomatic institutes, as well as several corporate and non-profit advisory boards. Over the course of his diplomatic career, Freeman earned numerous honors and awards, including two Distinguished Public Service Awards (1994), Order of 'Abd Al-'Azziz, 1st Class (1994), Defense Meritorious Service (1991), CIA Medallion (1991) and Distinguished Honor Award (1991). His most recent major publications and writings include Arts of Power: Statecraft and Diplomacy, U.S. Institute of Peace Press (1997) and The Diplomat's Dictionary, Second Edition, revised, U.S. Institute of Peace Press (1997).

On February 26, 2009, the Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair named Freeman chair of the National Intelligence Council, which culls intelligence from sixteen US agencies and compiles them into National Intelligence Estimates. In naming Freeman to the post, Blair cited his "diverse background in defense, diplomacy and intelligence." Following a firestorm of criticism from Jewish groups and supporters of Israel, Freeman withdrew his name from consideration for the position.

Statement on Withdrawal

By Charles W. Freeman, Jr.

To all who supported me or gave me words of encouragement during the controversy of the past two weeks, you have my gratitude and respect.

You will by now have seen the statement by Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair reporting that I have withdrawn my previous acceptance of his invitation to chair the National Intelligence Council.

I have concluded that the barrage of libelous distortions of my record would not cease upon my entry into office. The effort to smear me and to destroy my credibility would instead continue. I do not believe the National Intelligence Council could function effectively while its chair was under constant attack by unscrupulous people with a passionate attachment to the views of a political faction in a foreign country. I agreed to chair the NIC to strengthen it and protect it against politicization, not to introduce it to efforts by a special interest group to assert control over it through a protracted political campaign.

As those who know me are well aware, I have greatly enjoyed life since retiring from government. Nothing was further from my mind than a return to public service. When Admiral Blair asked me to chair the NIC I responded that I understood he was "asking me to give my freedom of speech, my leisure, the greater part of my income, subject myself to the mental colonoscopy of a polygraph, and resume a daily commute to a job with long working hours and a daily ration of political abuse." I added that I wondered "whether there wasn't some sort of downside to this offer." I was mindful that no one is indispensable; I am not an exception. It took weeks of reflection for me to conclude that, given the unprecedentedly challenging circumstances in which our country now finds itself abroad and at home, I had no choice but accept the call to return to public service. I thereupon resigned from all positions that I had held and all activities in which I was engaged. I now look forward to returning to private life, freed of all previous obligations.

I am not so immodest as to believe that this controversy was about me rather than issues of public policy. These issues had little to do with the NIC and were not at the heart of what I hoped to contribute to the quality of analysis available to President Obama and his administration. Still, I am saddened by what the controversy and the manner in which the public vitriol of those who devoted themselves to sustaining it have revealed about the state of our civil society. It is apparent that we Americans cannot any longer conduct a serious public discussion or exercise independent judgment about matters of great importance to our country as well as to our allies and friends.

The libels on me and their easily traceable email trails show conclusively that there is a powerful lobby determined to prevent any view other than its own from being aired, still less to factor in American understanding of trends and events in the Middle East. The tactics of the Israel Lobby plumb the depths of dishonor and indecency and include character assassination, selective misquotation, the willful distortion of the record, the fabrication of falsehoods, and an utter disregard for the truth. The aim of this Lobby is control of the policy process through the exercise of a veto over the appointment of people who dispute the wisdom of its views, the substitution of political correctness for analysis, and the exclusion of any and all options for decision by Americans and our government other than those that it favors.

There is a special irony in having been accused of improper regard for the opinions of foreign governments and societies by a group so clearly intent on enforcing adherence to the policies of a foreign government - in this case, the government of Israel. I believe that the inability of the American public to discuss, or the government to consider, any option for US policies in the Middle East opposed by the ruling faction in Israeli politics has allowed that faction to adopt and sustain policies that ultimately threaten the existence of the state of Israel. It is not permitted for anyone in the United States to say so. This is not just a tragedy for Israelis and their neighbors in the Middle East; it is doing widening damage to the national security of the United States.

The outrageous agitation that followed the leak of my pending appointment will be seen by many to raise serious questions about whether the Obama administration will be able to make its own decisions about the Middle East and related issues. I regret that my willingness to serve the new administration has ended by casting doubt on its ability to consider, let alone decide what policies might best serve the interests of the United States rather than those of a Lobby intent on enforcing the will and interests of a foreign government.

In the court of public opinion, unlike a court of law, one is guilty until proven innocent. The speeches from which quotations have been lifted from their context are available for anyone interested in the truth to read. The injustice of the accusations made against me has been obvious to those with open minds. Those who have sought to impugn my character are uninterested in any rebuttal that I or anyone else might make.

Still, for the record: I have never sought to be paid or accepted payment from any foreign government, including Saudi Arabia or China, for any service, nor have I ever spoken on behalf of a foreign government, its interests, or its policies. I have never lobbied any branch of our government for any cause, foreign or domestic. I am my own man, no one else's, and with my return to private life, I will once again - to my pleasure - serve no master other than myself. I will continue to speak out as I choose on issues of concern to me and other Americans.

I retain my respect and confidence in President Obama and DNI Blair. Our country now faces terrible challenges abroad as well as at home. Like all patriotic Americans, I continue to pray that our president can successfully lead us in surmounting them.

Jewish solidarity with Muslims against Zionism

By John Burl Smith

Israel's inhumane occupation and recent war in Gaza have exposed international media as propagandist by making it seem all Jews are solidly behind Zionism. For the first time, Jews around the world made a concerted effort to say to the world that all Jews are not Zionist and support Israel. Labeling anti-Semitic any voices that speak against Israel, the international media can only bristle, while marginalizing Jews that criticize Israeli's oppression in Palestine. What follows is a global sampling of Jewish individuals and groups that oppose Zionism.

"For over one hundred years, they have been subjected to a carefully conceived plan, to drive them from their homes and their land," stated Rabbi Yisroel D. Weiss, Neturei-Karta International or Jews United Against Zionism representative, in Durban, South Africa. He spoke in support of Palestinians, "Throughout their history, the Zionists have resorted to intimidation, war, ethnic cleansing and state sponsored terrorism to achieve their goals.

Zionism is a political construct that has caused strife between Arabs and the indigenous Jewish populations of Palestine. Indigenous Jews who lived in Palestine prior to 1948 opposed and we continue to oppose the concept of a sovereign Jewish state, which is counter to the very edict of 'Jewish law.' But among Zionist's greatest crimes is that they claim to carry out these nefarious actions in the name of holiness, in the name of the Almighty, in the name of Judaism and the Jewish people!"

Barred from the media, Neturei-Karta organized demonstrations in Montreal, New York, California, Washington and London. Addressing one of the largest demonstrations (25,000) in New York, Rabbi Weiss said, "Judaism forbids and rejects Zionism and the existence of the State of 'Israel.' We have been expressly commanded by the Almighty and forbidden to have our own sovereignty. Torah believing Jews, led by some of the most esteemed rabbis of the 20th century have always opposed and fought against Zionism and ultimately the State of 'Israel."

Relegated to news outlets like Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera, anti-war activist Anas Tekriti of the Muslim British Initiative in London mounted a campaign against the BBC because it refused to broadcast a charity appeal for Gaza victims. Pointing to a Jewish Rabbi who burned his Israeli passport at the Israeli embassy in London, he said, "The coordination of faith-based and secular human rights groups has awakened global consciousness of the media injustice. The solidarity Jewish individuals and groups have shown with Arab Muslim, Christian and human rights groups in London included Jews from across the spectrum who denounced Israel's actions."

Jimmy Johnson, international coordinator of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD ) in Israel said "The U.K. chapter has organized solidarity marches with British Muslims and Israeli groups and was also behind rallies held in Jerusalem which drew Jews, Muslims, Christians and secular groups to protest the war. The Palestinian solidarity campaign built coalitions with various groups in Israel and in Europe because white Europeans are hesitant to speak out when the argument is framed as West vs. Muslims."

Several London-based Jewish organizations in coalition with Muslim groups were the driving force behind mass demonstrations throughout Europe and America to protest the Israeli massacre of Gaza civilians during the 22-day offensive; though air strikes have continued. Up to 25,000 marchers hit the streets of Paris in early January, while in Brussels a protest drew 30,000 on Jan. 11. The largest protests took place in Madrid where 250,000 rallied on Jan. 10 and another 100,000 in Barcelona. A London Hyde Park protest drew 100,000 in one day.

Kamal Al-Halbawy of the Muslim Brotherhood said, "Faith groups were at the very heart of this campaign. Christians of various denominations and Jewish groups with different views on Israel all came out to support Muslim groups protesting the massacre in Gaza."

A diverse group of Eight Jewish Canadian women protesting Israel's military action in Gaza occupied the Israeli consulate in Toronto. Their occupation was in solidarity with the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza under a full-scale military assault. Over 660 people were killed and 3000 injured in the air strikes and in the ground invasion.

The group included Judy Rebick, professor; Judith Deutsch, psychoanalyst and president of Science for Peace; and filmmaker, B.H. Yael. Smadar Carmon, a Canadian Israeli peace activist said, "We carried out the protest to ensure that Jewish voices against the massacre in Gaza were heard." They demanded that Israel end its military assault and lift the 18-month siege of Gaza and allow humanitarian aid into the territory. The international media can no longer hide the division among Jews and Zionist in and outside Israel. Israeli Soldiers Tell of Atrocities

Tel Aviv - Pressured by Israeli human rights groups, the Israeli military announced Thursday (3-19-09) that it had ordered an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division of the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) Military Police into allegations that war crimes were committed during the Gaza offensive by the army. The Israeli Ha'aretz daily published accounts of some of the combat soldiers that testified during a symposium held last month at a college in northern Israel.

Breaking the Silence, an ex-soldiers' organization has revealed many atrocities committed against Palestinians, according to The Independent on Sunday, a London based newspaper. One such account came from a former member of an assassination squad who told of his role in an ambush that killed two militants and two Palestinian bystanders. He also admitted the army had targeted high-profile Hamas leaders, such as Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz Rantisi in 2005, and Said Siyam in the most recent offensive. They cited testimonies of many soldiers; one described how a sniper killed a mother and her two children, after the platoon commander let the family go. Another incident involved a company commander who ordered the killing of an elderly Palestinian woman.

One witness said soldiers complained openly that "we should kill everyone there [in the center of Gaza]. Everyone there is a terrorist". He went on, "The lives of Palestinians, let's say, is something very, very less important than the lives of our soldiers," said the squad leader.

Breaking the Silence has collected testimony from hundreds of former troops concerned about what they saw and did - including abuses of Palestinians - during their service in the occupied territories. These incidents might have been forgotten by all except for the more than 3,000 Palestinian casualties inflicted by Operation Cast Lead this January.

The nine human rights groups, including B'Tselem and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, which were part of the symposium, have demanded that Israeli Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz establish an "independent" investigative body, not linked to the military, to examine allegations of lax rules of engagement that allowed civilians to be killed. The Israeli military has a history "of failure to investigate Palestinian deaths. (Sources: www.earthtimes.org, www.independent.co.uk and http://usa.mediamonitors.net)

Jewish Domination of American Media

By John Burl Smith

"There is no greater power in the world today than that wielded by the manipulators of public opinion in America. No king or pope of old, no conquering general or high priest ever disposed of a power even remotely approaching that of the few dozen men who control America's mass media of news and entertainment. This power reaches into every home in America, working its will during every waking hour. It shapes and molds the mind of virtually every citizen, young or old, rich or poor, simple or sophisticated."

The foregoing description is taken from a pamphlet published by the research staff of National Vanguard Books entitled Who Rules America? The Alien Grip on Our News and Entertainment Media Must Be Broken. Many Americans have become increasingly concerned about the question it poses. It focuses on the narrow spectrum covered by news, entertainment, music, films and literary publications. The assertion that Jews dominate all aspects of America's media and use that power to control minds prompted this review.

"The mass media form our image of the world and then tell us what to think about that image. Essentially everything we know -- or think we know -- about events outside our own neighborhood and acquaintances comes to us via daily newspapers, weekly news magazines, radio, movies, or television. For example, the way in which the news is covered: which items are emphasized and which are played down; the reporter's choice of words, tone of voice, and facial expressions; the wording of headlines; the choice of illustrations -- all of these things subliminally and yet profoundly affect the way in which we interpret what we see or hear.

Moreover, columnists and editors employ carefully developed psychological techniques that guide our thought and opinion so that we are in tune with the "in" crowd, the "beautiful" people and "smart" money. They shape our attitudes toward various types of people and behaviors, and then exhibit them in context on TV dramas and situation comedies."

This report was commissioned by the National Alliance, a conservative think tank, consequently I do not subscribe to many of its views. Some may even consider their views and how they present information racist or bigoted. Nevertheless, in providing background and history, they name names (which are far too numerous to list here) of not only companies but individuals to support their contention of Jewish domination of America's media.

Usually, faced with such allegations, Jews simply offer the counter charge of "anti-Semitism" to cow those making such assertions. However, this 21-page report goes to great length to show that the Jewish controlled "media's treatment of Middle East news, as well as some editors or commentators are slavishly pro-Israel. No one dares suggest that the U.S. government is backing the wrong side in the Arab-Jewish conflict, or that 9-11 was a result of that support." Moreover, that it "served Jewish interests, rather than American interests, to invade Iraq, Israel's principal rival in the Middle East."

This fascinating report, not only tells what is behind the Jewish takeover, it explains the psychology as well. "The average American, distinguishes between TV's fictional situations and reality with great difficulty. Responses to the televised actions, statements, and attitudes of TV actors are much like one's response to peers in real life. For all too many Americans, the real world has been replaced by the false reality of the TV environment, and it is to this false reality that they conform." According to these researchers, what Jews have done with their control is blur the line between entertainment and news, whether televised or printed. The insidious thing about this form of thought control is that even when we realize that entertainment or news is biased, the media masters still are able to manipulate our thoughts."

If one controls the information people get, they control the thoughts people have. Control of the opinion-molding media is nearly monolithic -- television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, motion pictures -- speak with a single voice. Despite the appearance of variety, there is no real dissent, no alternative source of facts or ideas accessible to the great mass of people that might allow them to form counter opinions to that of the media masters.

It isn't simply a matter of the media being controlled by profit-hungry capitalists, some of whom happen to be Jewish; it is how this power is used. Whether one agrees with the contention that Jews in control of the media are a threat, particularly in the case of Zionism and Israel, to the detriment of America, this report is not only interesting, but fascinating reading. For those who dare challenge what they think they know about freedom of the press in America and who controls the media, go to www.natvan.com/who-rules-america/ to read the report.

Disgruntled feels: Outrageous! First of all, it was foolish for the federal government to use borrowed money to bail out investment banks and an insurance company. Now, we learn that a considerable sum of those borrowed funds that our children and their children will have to repay with interest went to foreign entities. Even more outlandish is the revelation that AIG paid approximately $165 million of bailout money in bonuses to the executives that made the decisions that led to its failure. It has been decided that the government will not bail out many of the homeowners that made mistakes in buying homes they could not afford based on their income, but it is okay to bail out the financial entities that greedily raped them of their limited resources and stuck them up with exorbitant interest rates on the road to creating this financial mess. What is happening now goes beyond the notion of moral hazard; it is outrageous for the federal government to reward failure on this magnitude. Even more outrageous is the lack of public outrage over the pay outs to these thieves and plunderers.

Disgruntled wants to know: Out of one side of their mouths, they espouse such things as free market ideology and democracy. Out of the other, they demand government handouts to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars with the frequent public warning - "there will be far direr consequences for the economy," if the government fails to hand over the money. In this instance, forget the "invisible hand," the magical mechanism of market correction; the government must act and do so quickly without question. Now that all these dollars have been showered on financial markets and Americans are still losing homes and jobs and stuck with usury interest rates on their credit cards, it is time we faced the unpleasant fact and ask the tough questions we have religiously avoided. The answers may shed some light on the hypocrisy that abounds between stated philosophy and policy. One such question is, did the federal government bail out the nation's financial industry because it is controlled by the same group of people that shape public opinion and has bought and control our elected representatives?

Disgruntled says: These are tough economic times. No one can envision the future with enough clarity to guide our actions to ensure a positive outcome; we are basically "shooting" in the dark, even the pundits and experts admit we are in unchartered territory. So, most of us struggle, which is a part of life, hoping to make the best possible decisions. Tragically, some choose to end it by shooting themselves and others. I have noticed an increase, at least in the reporting, in the multiple deaths and suicides, such as the German student, the young man in Arkansas, the husband in California and others that have killed family members and others before shooting themselves. They were all depressed or suffered with depression. I have posed the question before and continue to wonder about the role prescription drugs play in these murderous rampages. It is past time that we answered that question and sever the link if one exists.
